The most elementary part of Khmer hospitality was that of the Cambodian children. Watching them makes us appreciate the simplest things in life, like a wave or a smile... They stand as a reminder that happiness does not need a price.
Their innocence truly warmed our hearts.
We found this boy high up in the temple of Bakong. He was just sitting there on the steps, probably waiting for someone to take his picture.
Children always walk or bike several kilometers to go to school. Sometimes we see children with bikes double their size!
While we were on the tuktuk, this girl kept on waving at us even with just one hand on her bike. Of course we waved back, but she didn't stop waving at us until we were literally out of sight. Who wouldn't be touched with that gesture?
On the way inside Preah Khan temple, a little girl who was selling bracelets kept on asking,
"Where you from mister? You from Philippines?"
D was playing and he said "No...."
"America?" - "No"... "Canada?" - "No"... "Australia?" - "No"... "England?" - "No"
"Philippines? Come on Mister!" - "No"
"Japan?" - "No"... "China?" - "No"
Then D asked her, "Why do you ask?" and she said...
"Hawaii! You come from Hawaii?"
We were just smiling at her then she suddenly placed one of the bracelets she was selling on D's arm, and said, "FREE!" Was it a sales ploy? I don't know, but I had to run after her to give her a few riels!!
Then while walking away she said, "You come from Philippines Mister!"
This was the boy in the temple of Lolei waiting for alms. He had candies in his hand already and was hoping for more...
Mother and child on a motorcycle, probably on the way home. The kid also didn't stop waving at us until they made a turn on their street.
Outside the temples, it is a common sight to see children being carried by their playmates and play catch-the-ball. In these pictures, the girl on top of the other kid should catch the ball thrown at her, otherwise, her playmates will throw the ball hard at her. In order to avoid being hit by the ball, they will start chasing each other, just running around and laughing... They will do this for hours on end!
And lastly...
We didn't tell them to do the sign!!! Guess it was a natural thing for them... Hee hee hee!
:D
