Luang Prabang -- Continuing Day 2... Sa paper producers, Ban Houa Xieng, and Night Market

A few streets away from Wat Xieng Thong, is a row of houses selling traditional Sa Paper, one of the products of the cottage industries in Luang Prabang. Sa paper is made from the bark of the mulberry tree, which is where silkworms get their food! Silk is actually another fine product of Luang Prabang.

Beautiful handcrafted notebooks were on display. I soooo wanted to buy a few of these notebooks, but remember... We were travelling on backpacks so I had to be happy just taking pictures of these cute items. I took my time touching the notebooks, taking mental note of their slightly coarse and thick texture... And appreciated their colors by looking at the other sa paper products such as lanterns, frames, and albums. So many to choose from but I just couldn't buy anything for us! I was saving some space to take home some silk which I will buy later on at the Night market.

We were hungry already, so we started walking back to the town center. Monks in orange robes are a common sight in LP, and we can't help but stare every time we see one or a group of monks walking around town.

When I couldn't walk any further, I asked D if we could stop at one of the stalls serving noodles. The stall had two tables with wooden benches, we took one of the little tables, and these were served to us very, very hot! After this light lunch, we had to get some rest from all the walking and returned to the hotel.

We came out again by dinnertime. Since we didn't have any idea what we wanted to have for tonight, we just walked around the nearby streets to find a place that would look appetizing to us. A few streets away, the sight of this caught our attention, so many tourists were lining up to get bowls full of food!

And some skewers!

They charge about 1USD for a bowl full of food. You get to pick and put as much in the bowl they give you. The skewers/barbecued pork and spring rolls cost extra of course. They actually taste good!!! Our meal for the night only set us back about 3USD.

This place, called Ban Houa Xieng, comes alive at night as food sellers hold shop in this empty space. The vibe is very warm and festive as while eating, everyone was enjoying a bottle of Beerlao, and telling stories about their travel adventures.

After a hearty dinner, we had some muffins from the night market. These muffins are Costco/Sams Club size muffins! There were many flavors to choose from.

And off we went to the night market to find some goodies!! The girl on the left with the black sleeveless shirt was actually smiling at me... Maybe trying to entice me to buy one of her quilted blankets?

But we were on the market for the silks. We walked and checked out every seller for the nicest silk scarves to take home to our moms, at the most reasonable price of course!

We bought our silk scarves from her... Great bargain!

There was a dizzying array of scarves, shawls and other silks. They were so temping to bring home but I had to restrain myself to just getting a few pieces. One for me, another for my mom and for D's mom...

Paintings and watercolor illustrations on sa paper was the ony form of artwork found in the night market. Paintings on canvas are a rare commodity in Luang Prabang.

Every stall has a different merchandise for the tourist. Nobody will be bored in the Night market as it always has something to offer for different tastes.

Never-ending rows of tents rise up every night in LP... So amazing.

Luang Prabang continues to work its magic through the night:

goodnight! :)
